Not every game will suit every taste, but there’s plenty of must-play gaming for all in our top 100 all-time adventure games. But we’re completely confident that our final selections are deserving candidates and a wonderfully diverse representation of the genre’s best to date. The beauty of opinion lists is that there’s no right or wrong, and we argued long and hard among ourselves just to arrive at ours. How do you compare games spanning decades of styles and technology? Is a now-antiquated genre pioneer from 1985 still a classic today? Does it need to be? Do new games have any right to stand alongside their forebears that paved the way and have stood the test of time? What’s really important? Longevity, innovation, production values, historical relevance? What’s more crucial? Story, exploration, puzzles? With a number in mind, that left one important consideration. It’s not only possible to think of 100 quality adventures, it still leaves some painful omissions. While much of the world probably couldn’t even name 100 adventure games, those of us who cut our teeth on the groundbreaking early text titles, basked in the Golden Age of graphic adventures, suffered through the dark times and lived to see the modern-day (relative) renaissance know better. 50? That leaves far fewer casualties, but some series alone can easily stake a claim to three or four slots. So what would it be this time? 25? You’d be amazed how quickly those slots filled. With such a rich history, just how many deserve to make a list of all-time greats? Our previous compilation of top adventures had 20 games listed, but that was nearly ten years old itself. Hard to believe, isn’t it? We’ve seen plenty of classics over the decades, and new gems are still being produced today. The "Patron" system allows for these challenges to be replayed with even more limitations imposed on the player. These challenge modes present the player with new obstacles to overcome, for example through limiting the champions available to choose from. Most adventures also have additional challenge modes, unlocked after meeting various criteria. All the campaigns are further divided into "adventures", which are narrative frames for the core gameplay, for example recounting how the player's champions help a farmer rescue a farmer's daughter who has been kidnapped by werewolves. These event campaigns often reward unique champions that are only available to unlock during their respective events. Some of the campaigns are permanent, while others are event-based and only available for a short time. Each campaign has a unique formation pattern, forcing players to rethink how to arrange their champions. The game is segmented into several "campaigns", each with its own unique Favor, ensuring progress does not carry over between campaigns. ![]() The game can be automated to a degree using the "Modron Automation" system which allows the game to handle all necessary input to repeatedly play itself for a period of up to 7 days. Furthermore, players can collect items that permanently boost their champions further, either as random drops, or through purchasing "chests" filled with random items. As players complete objectives, or reset their current adventure, they accumulate "Favor" with a specific deity, which increases the amount of gold they find in subsequent sessions. The player needs to figure out a "formation" to place these champions in to ensure progress can be made against higher-level waves of monsters. The individual champions have both strengths and weaknesses, often improving other champions that meet various criteria. This gold is used to upgrade the player's champions, or unlock new ones. The core gameplay of Idle Champions revolves around the player selecting "champions" (such as Bruenor, Minsc, and Celeste, among others) to fight waves of increasingly difficult monsters, thereby accumulating gold.
